School leavers all set for Olympics
Bromley gets set for the Olympics by offering a new entry into leisure careers for 16 and 17 year old school leavers. Olympic plans for London are predicted to double demand for leisure staff in the capital by 2012.
A new two year course offered by local leisure trust Bromley Mytime and Orpington College in partnership with the London Leisure College, will equip newcomers to the leisure industry with a wide range of skills including customer care, sports coaching, fitness instruction, life guarding, hospitality and general leisure centre operation. Practical sessions also are run in local leisure centres, and include practical job shadowing including running activities for all ages, and a wide range of tasks.
Training and Development Manager Sharon Stevens said, “Many young people leave school with no clear idea of what they want to do. But if they have an interest in sports and leisure a career in the industry might be just the ticket. We can offer starter courses over two years with lots of practical experience and the option of earning a wage after the first year. We are aiming to prepare the local labour market to meet unprecedented demands for skilled staff in the run up to 2012, whilst growing our own future leisure managers.”
Applicants should have an outgoing personality and enthusiasm for sports and leisure, enjoy being part of a friendly team and be able to swim. Academic qualifications are not essential but applicants will need to attend for interview at Orpington College on Wednesday 16 August.
