Service Station Owner Fined
Diesel containing a level of sulphur over 4.5 times the legal limit was found on sale at a petrol station in Orpington High Street, following a sampling campaign carried out by Bromley Trading Standards Officers.
The owner of Orpington Pond Service Station, Mr Arulampalam Kathirgamanathan was prosecuted by the Trading Standards Team and found guilty of selling the illegal diesel under the Clean Air Act 1993. He bought the diesel from a supplier who was not his normal provider.
Mr Kathirgamanathan was fined £1500 and ordered to pay costs of more than £2300 by Bromley Magistrates on 29 June 2006.
Trading Standards Manager Rob Vale said: “The permitted level of sulphur in diesel was cut in 2005 and will be reduced yet further in 2009 to help contribute to a reduction in environmental problems, such as acid rain. We take breaches of the Clean Air Act very seriously, and do routinely check for compliance with its requirements.”
