Over forty children have taken the ‘de-stabiliser challenge’ and bravely cycled on their own for the first time. The ‘big push’ was part of a fun day organised by Bromley Council’s Road Safety Unit as part of the national Bike Week campaign. The event took place at Ravens Wood School where participants were able to take part in a number of innovative races to test their skills and learn more about cycle safety.
“This was a fantastic day which showed how much fun cycling can be. It was a chance for all to learn to ride their bikes in a safe environment, enjoyed by young and old alike with people taking up cycling challenges they otherwise would not have had the opportunity to do,” said Jo Luff, Cycle Training Officer from the London Borough of Bromley.
Children enjoyed a dazzling show of bike skills by BMX champion Rich Johnson, who performed daring stunts on his bike. Those participating practised their cycle skills in a slow race where the winner is the one to pass the line last! Another race with a slalom tested the children’s ability and agility on their bikes. Young riders also got a taster of how to ride safely on the road with instructors giving classes on cycling proficiency. The Bigfoot Bike shop from Hayes was on hand to check bikes for safety and to remove stabilisers.
Bike Week, which takes place annually, is a national celebration of cycling, intended to encourage and educate cyclists with ability levels ranging from novice to veteran. It attracts over 250,000 participants yearly, spread across nearly 2,000 events up and down the country.
Bromley Council offers cycle training courses for all ages. For a limited time adult and family cycling training courses are free of charge. To find out more call our Road Safety team on 020 8313 4546 or visit www.bromley.gov.uk/roadsafety
