20 June 2006

A fifteen-year-old member of the so-called FTS CREW has today (19 June 2006) received a two year Antisocial Behaviour Order (ASBO) at Bromley Magistrates Court.

Kevin Barnett has consistently terrorised local shopkeepers and residents in the Burnt Ash Lane area of the borough by committing serious acts of antisocial behaviour with a clear disregard for the law.

In particular, he has been abusive and threatening, caused damage and has intimidated people in the area.

Under the terms of the ASBO, Barnett must not:

  • Use threatening, foul or abusive words or behaviour intending to cause harassment alarm or distress to any person resident in the London Borough of Bromley. Enter any of the following roads:
    •   Ridgeway Drive Bromley
    •   Pike Close Bromley
  • Enter the area surrounded by Masons Hill Bromley, Hayes Lane Bromley, Hayes Road Bromley and Westmoreland Road Bromley, except in school hours to attend school.
  • Enter the area known as the Hackington Estate, north of Beckenham Town Centre, including Hackington Crescent, Stumps Hill, Worsley Bridge Road, Overbrae, Braeside, Southend Road and Ridgeway Drive.
  • Enter shops in Burnt Ash Lane, namely PC Hospital, The Fish Bar, The Olive Branch, Cafe Clementine, Martins Newsagents, The Off Licence at 111 Burnt Ash Lane, the Teasel Public House, or remain in any shop, school or commercial premises if asked to leave by staff.
  • Associate in a public place with Jake Dunmall, Sanchez Williams and other named individuals.
  • Contact directly or indirectly any witnesses to the proceedings.

Cllr George Taylor, Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Safety and Chair of the Safer Bromley Partnership said: “This sends out another clear message that people in the borough do not have to put up with this kind of appalling behaviour. The Council’s antisocial behaviour team has worked in partnership with the police to bring this order about. The crucial thing is the support from the public that enables us to deal with these situations.”

Insp. Andy Johnstone of the Bromley Police said: “It is just not right for a small criminal minority to be able to impose their unacceptable levels of behaviour on the law abiding majority. People within our community have a right to enjoy a good quality of life and to be able to come and go without being in fear of crime or intimidation from people such as Kevin Barnett.

"This successful application will go a long way to disrupt the anti social behaviour of not only one person, but also those people who choose to follow his example. It is important that people living in the area know about this and feel confident in our commitment to enforce the order robustly.”

Cllr. Colin Smith, Chairman of the Safer Neighbourhood Panel in Plaistow and Sundridge said: “Residents and businesses will welcome this outcome.

“My fervent hope is that he uses this opportunity to reflect on his behaviour and change his ways.

He needs to understand that if he breaches his ASBO, a prison sentence is the next step in the process.”
