Funds to boost Duke of Edinburgh Award
Groups and individuals in Bromley are being invited to apply for funds raised by a former Mayor to promote the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Over £28,000 was raised by Councillor Mrs Anne Manning during her year as Mayor (2004/05), through a variety of fund-raising events. The aim of the fund was to maintain and encourage participation in the scheme by any group operating in the borough. It was recognised that, while participation in the borough is amongst the highest in the country, costs such as for travel and equipment can be a deterrent to some families.
The Scheme offers an enjoyable, challenging and rewarding programme of activities for young people aged 14 to 24. It provides nationally recognised certificates at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and is non‑competitive and non‑academic, while encouraging young people to gain new skills, make a positive contribution to their local communities, and taste outdoor adventure. Most of the activity takes place under the Council’s licence, but there are also other operating authorities within the borough.
Councillor Mrs Manning said: “Our aim is to fund projects and individuals enabling young people who might otherwise be unable to take part in the scheme, on grounds of cost, to do so. We will especially be looking for imaginative proposals from units which encourage the maximum increase in participation, and show co‑operation between the different operating groups. Up to £1,000 is available to organisations and £100 to individuals”.
Application forms and guidance notes are attached and can be downloaded by selecting the following link to the Council’s website. The closing date is 31 August 2006.
