Recycling counts in Bromley
Hundreds of residents have already responded to the borough’s recycling campaign by requesting recycling boxes from the Council. The Recycling for All campaign, with residents help, aims to boost recycling levels to new record levels of 50%.
“We are absolutely delighted by the numbers of residents who have joined our recycling scheme even in the last few days. We are asking all of our residents to join the scheme because the case for recycling is irrefutable - on environmental, economic and I believe, moral grounds. We know that it is only by working in partnership with residents that this can be achieved” said Councillor Colin Smith, Executive Councillor for Environment and Leisure.
Statistics show that every working day in June, 70 residents requested recycling boxes so they could join the Council’s fortnightly recycling scheme. Latest statistics show that over 1430 residents have asked to join the scheme in June. This compares with just 313 in June 2005 and 779 last month.
The news follows the distribution of individual letters to households across the borough notifying individuals in changes to their waste and recycling collection days. The changes are designed to ensure that there are enough vehicles in place for waste vehicles to collect the increased recycling materials put out for collection. For some residents, the changes have been minimal - with the recycling day being brought forward a week. For other residents, the letters merely confirms existing arrangements.
Latest statistics show that in the 12 months ending March 2006, a staggering 13,820 tonnes was collected from residents already recycling. In addition, 1596 tonnes of cans and plastics was collected as well as 4411 tonnes of glass. Overall, 41,242 tonnes was recycled, 24% of the total. However, almost 133,000 tonnes was not recycled and this figure should be reduced dramatically in the coming months.
