Telephone call leads to reward
A Bromley resident has received an award of £150 for alerting the police to a graffiti vandal. The award to the resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, was made as part of the Council’s enviro-crime reward scheme which encourages witnesses to report those damaging the environment through anti social acts like fly tipping and graffiti. Under the scheme, recipients of an award can collect up to £500.
“The enviro-crime reward scheme is our way of saying thank you to those individuals who have helped bring offenders to justice. We need people to come forward and tell us when they see somebody spoiling our environment - whether it’s fly tipping bags of rubbish in a footpath or dumping an old car in a quiet street - a crime is being committed” said Peter Turvey, Enforcement and Technical Support Manager.
A resident of College Road, Bromley was returning home from walking her dog when she saw a youth writing graffiti on a wall. The police were telephoned immediately but the youth had left by the time they arrived. After giving the police a description of the offender, the young teenager was found nearby and apprehended. The youth later admitted to causing the damage.
Anyone witnessing an enviro-crime is advised to call the police immediately and report the details to the Council’s Customer Service Centre on 020 8313 4557.
Graffiti, dumped rubbish or abandoned vehicles can all be reported to the Council so that appropriate action can be taken to tackle the problem.
