main content Gang Member receives ASBO

08 June 2006

A sixteen-year-old from the Burnt Ash Lane area of the borough received a two year Antisocial Behaviour Order (ASBO) on Friday 26 May 2006 at Bromley Magistrates Court.

Jake Dunmall, a member of the so-called FTS CREW, consistently terrorised local shopkeepers and residents committing serious acts of antisocial behaviour with a clear disregard for the law.

Dunmall also waged a 14-month campaign of hatred, threats, violence and intimidation against a family in the borough.

Families in the area have lived in fear of this gang and have had to significantly change their way of life to protect themselves and their children. They have shown great bravery in coming forward and are now protected by a condition of the ASBO not to contact them. The penalty for a breach could be prison for up to 5 years.

Under the terms of the ASBO, Dunmall must not:

  • Use threatening, foul or abusive words or behaviour intending to cause harassment, alarm or distress to any person resident in the London Borough of Bromley.
  • Enter any of the following roads, Ridgeway Close, Bromley, Pike Close Bromley.
  • Enter the area surrounded by Masons Hill, Bromley, Hayes Lane, Bromley, Hayes Road, Bromley and Westmoreland Road, Bromley.
  • Enter shops in Burnt Ash Lane namely PC Hospital, The Fish Bar, The Olive Branch, Cape Clementine, Martins Newsagents, The Off Licence at 111 Burnt Ash Lane and The Teasel Public House or remaining in any shop, school or commercial premises if asked to leave by staff.
  • Congregate or be part of a group of three or more persons whose presence and behaviour is likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress to any person.
  • Associate in public with Sanchez Williams and other named individuals.
  • Contact certain other named individuals.

Cllr George Taylor, Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Safety and Chair of the Safer Bromley Partnership said: “The Council’s Antisocial Behaviour Unit has worked hard in partnership with the Police to gather the necessary evidence to enable action to be taken. This should ease the pressure on families and shopkeepers who have had their lives turned upside down by the thoughtless yob behaviour of this gang.

“It really is totally unacceptable that people have to put up with such appalling actions in their local streets. We simply will not tolerate this kind of antisocial behaviour here in Bromley.

“This shows that people do not have to tolerate antisocial behaviour, it can be dealt with effectively but public co-operation is key.”

Cllr. Colin Smith, Chairman of the Safer Neighbourhood Panel in Plaistow and Sundridge said: “Local residents and businesses will be delighted with this outcome.

“My fervent hope is that he uses this opportunity to reflect on his behaviour and change his ways.

“He needs to understand that if he breaches his ASBO, a prison sentence is the next step in the process.”

Insp. Andy Johnstone of the Bromley Police said: "The granting of this order is welcomed by the Plaistow and Sundridge Safer Neighbourhood Team as an effective measure to control the criminal and antisocial behaviour of this young person.

"It is important that the community, who have had to tolerate his appalling behaviour, is reassured that police, in partnership with the Council's antisocial behaviour team, will take positive action to protect them.

"I hope the associated publicity surrounding this case will send out a clear message to the minority of people who affect the lives of others through their antisocial behaviour, that they will not be allowed to get away with it. If people see this boy breaching any of his conditions I would encourage them to report it to either the police or the antisocial behaviour team. Together we can improve the quality of life for people in Bromley."
