main content Bromley U14s and U16s rugby sides - first matches

13 March 2006

On Sunday 12th March 2006, the Bromley District U14s and U16s sides played their inaugural matches against West Kent District at Tonbridge Juddians. The Bromley District Squads, supported by the Bromley Rugby Development Group (BRDG), were made up of boys who had been to Kent County trials, but had not made the final Kent squads for their age groups. Over the past 3 months, they have been receiving additional coaching and a squad was selected to represent the borough.

The U16s had a fantastic day and came home winners by an emphatic 44 – 5, with tries from Adam Stanley (2), Richard Gunther (2), Mark Jacobs, Steven Smith, Jack Forrest, and Josh Parks, Richard Gunther and Jack Forrest also added a conversion each to their points tallies. Man of the Match, Richard Gunther had a storming game at scrum half and rounded off a great display with a superb sidestepping individual try from his own half, mid-way through the second period. He was supported well by Adam Stanley who had a strong all round match at No. 8, and fly-half Jack Forrest who kicked well in open play and showed great tactical awareness to bring the back line into play at crucial times.

The U14s also had a good day and played 3 periods of 25 minutes, instead of the normal 2, due to the size of each squad, and to give as many of the players opportunities to play at this level. Bromley eventually went down 25 – 35, but were 20 - 15 up after the first two periods. The final result, was mainly due to the West Kent full-back who had a monumental influence on the game by scoring 4 tries and setting up another. James Hampton, Gregory Holder, and James Curr scored tries for Bromley along with a couple of forwards pushover tries where it was difficult to identify the eventual scorer.

The Bromley District U15s will be playing West Kent District at Orpington RFC on Wednesday 22nd March 7pm KO, all support greatly appreciated. The BRDG is made up of rugby clubs within the Bromley Borough and is focused on developing rugby at Youth and Mini levels, these Bromley District sides are a result of a successful Awards for All bid put forward by the BRDG.
