main content Penge Clean Up Day

12 May 2006

A community clean up day has been held in Penge. Local community groups - in conjunction with the Council’s Street Services - cut back overgrown vegetation and picked up rubbish, making the alleyways off Kenilworth Road and Royston Field clean and safe for everyone to use. The clean up operation forms part of the Council’s Purple Patch scheme which aims to help residents - who want to do something practical - make their neighbourhood a better place to live.

“It was surprising just how much we achieved in only a few hours. We wanted to do something to improve our local area and all our hard work has really paid off. It’s a great achievement for everyone involved” said Penny Read, Co-Secretary, Friends of Royston Field.

The clean up event - which also coincided with a community fun day and the launch of “Penge in Bloom” - was aided by Friends of Royston Field, Royston Estate Residents Association and the Groves Residents and Tenants Association.

“We are always pleased to help residents and community groups who want to work together and help make a difference to their environment. Our Purple Patch scheme offers advice on how to organise the clean up and provides free use of tools, gloves, bin bags and other equipment. We also collect all the accumulated rubbish and dispose of it when the clean up has finished” said Dean Radmore, West Area Manager.

The Purple Patch scheme assists community action with one-off clean up days in local areas affected by problems associated with anti-social behaviour or enviro-crime such as graffiti or fly-tipping. The scheme enables groups of residents to take positive action towards improving their environment, focusing on areas and problems which concern them the most.
Anyone wishing to organise a clean up in their local area should contact the Street Services Help Desk on 020 8313 4621 and ask for a Purple Patch information pack.
