main content Queue the Waldo webcam online – exclusively live!

08 June 2007

Web cameras at Waldo Road reuse and recycling centre are now broadcasting live images on the Council’s website. The unique pictures allow users to see how busy the recycling and reuse centre site is before setting off. The queue busting initiative follows residents’ suggestions and the £1 million transformation of the ‘tip’ into a reuse and recycling centre 18 months ago.

“Of course there are alternatives, but if you need to come to the centre, why not go online first and see if there is a queue? Residents have told us that a web cam would be a useful way of knowing just how busy Waldo Road is. It allows people to plan their journeys for when it is less busy. This will help reduce disturbance to nearby residents and improve congestion for passing motorists” said Councillor Colin Smith, Executive Councillor for Environment and Leisure.

Alternative options for residents thinking of using the reuse and recycling centre at Waldo Road include:

The cameras show how many vehicles are queuing in Waldo Road to enter the centre. If Waldo Road is full of queuing traffic, users of the site are encouraged to delay their journey to avoid queuing in Homesdale Road. To use the centre, residents need to bring their waste permit with them. The Waldo Road reuse and recycling centre is open 363 days a year:

  • Monday to Friday, 7am to 5:30pm
  • Saturday 7:30am to 4pm
  • Sunday 8am to 1pm
  • Bank holidays 8am to 4pm

The segregation of waste into different containers means that approximately 50% of all the waste disposed at the reuse and recycling centre is now recycled. 71% of residents are satisfied with the Borough’s reuse and recycling centres according to the Ipsos Mori 2006 general survey, an increase from 67% in 2005 and 60% in 2003.
