main content Admission to reception classes: proposed change

13 March 2007

Bromley Council has launched a consultation exercise that seeks the public’s views about its proposal to implement a single point of entry for admission to Reception classes in Bromley schools from September 2008.
Children starting reception class in infant and primary schools currently begin in either September or January. Bromley Council is considering changing this, so that all children begin at the same time, in September.

The proposal is explained in an information leaflet, Admission to Reception Classes: Proposed Change. Paper copies are available from Bromley Council Offices and Bromley libraries. Alternatively, you can phone 020 8313 4088 and ask for a copy to be sent to you.

Executive Councillor for Children and Young People, Ernest Noad, said:

“I would urge everyone with an interest in this important consultation to respond with their views so that they can be taken into account in the decision making process. Bromley Council welcomes your views”.

The deadline for responses is 11 April 2007 and there are a number of different ways in which you can make your views known:

Complete and return the tear-off slip in the leaflet (free post).

Email Bromley Council at onereceptionadmission.consultation@bromley.gov.uk

Write a letter to Gillian Pearson, director of children and young people services, Civic Centre, Stockwell Close, Bromley, BR1 3UH.

Fax your response to Bromley Council on 020 8313-4049.

Make comments at the public meetings, which have been organised to discuss the proposal. All meetings are scheduled to start at 7:00pm and finish at 8:15pm:

15 March – Warren Road Primary School, Warren Road, Orpington, BR6 6JF (entry via Cloonmore Avenue entrance)

22 March – Bromley Civic Centre

28 March – Royston Primary School, High Street, Penge, SE20 7QR (entry via Kent House Road entrance)

Bromley Council hopes that you take this opportunity to comment on it's proposal for a change on the policy for admission to reception classes.

Notes to editors:

The decision to consult on this proposal was taken by Councillor Ernest Noad, Bromley Council’s Executive Councillor for Children and Young People, at his meeting on 20 February 2007.
Should the proposal be implemented, it would apply to September 2008 admissions.
Any revised policy would be applicable to the schools for which Bromley is the Admissions Authority i.e. Community and Voluntary Controlled Schools. Foundation and Voluntary Aided Schools constitute their own Admission Authorities and as such would be outside the scope of any changes, as are Independent Schools.
