main content Council tax 2007/08 confirmed

02 March 2007

The Bromley part of the Council tax will rise by 4.8% in 2007/08, following full Council’s agreement last night with Executive’s recommendations earlier this month. Combined with the Greater London Authority (GLA) precept increase of 5.3%, Bromley residents are likely to continue to benefit from one of the lowest council tax levels in outer London next year, with an expected total increase of 4.9% overall.

In recommending the budget, Councillor Stephen Carr, Leader of the Council, said: “This is a budget that delivers on local peoples’ priorities and responds to the challenge of yet another year of under funding by central Government. Once again we’ve listened to what residents have told us and we’re putting more money into community safety, activities for young people and improvements to the street scene. If we had more government grant things would be easier, and we’ll continue to campaign for a fairer system of funding for the people of Bromley. Meanwhile, we’ll continue to look for ways to improve how we run our services and maintain our pledge of low council tax into the future.”

Notes to editors:

The Council Tax is made up of two parts: the Bromley share which is spent on providing council services and a ‘precept’ collected on behalf of the Greater London Authority. The latter goes towards funding the Metropolitan Police, the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, the London Development Agency, as well as the core functions of the GLA and Transport for London.
