main content Golf club’s illegal advertising is below par

21 March 2007

A well known golf club has been prosecuted for causing an obstruction with an illegal advertising hoarding in Court Road, Orpington. Crown Golf were found guilty in their absence at Bromley Magistrates’ Court and ordered them to pay fines and costs of £550.

“This form of illegal advertising cannot be allowed to compromise the health and safety of pedestrians and road users. We are always disappointed to resort to prosecution but when businesses have been warned and still fail to comply with the law, it leaves us with no other option” said Peter Turvey, Enforcement and Technical Support Manager.

The Court heard that Crown Golf, the parent company of Chelsfield Lakes Golf Club, were warned to remove illegal signs from the footway and grass verge opposite Chelsfield Lakes Golf Club, Court Road, in June of last year. When a large mobile advertising hoarding - 8 feet high by ten feet wide, publicising twilight golf at Chelsfield Lakes - was subsequently discovered by a council enforcement officer, legal action followed.
