Youth from St Mary Cray receives interim ASBO
A 15-year-old youth from St Mary Cray received an interim Antisocial Behaviour Order (ASBO) on Wednesday 14 March 2007 at Bromley Magistrates Youth Court.
The Court heard evidence that John Rye of Stonegate Close has for three years been abusive to people in his neighbourhood, caused criminal damage and been responsible for mass graffiti. People locally were often intimidated by his bad behaviour. The names of those people who gave evidence and requested anonymity will not be revealed.
Under the terms of the interim ASBO issued to curb his behaviour, John Rye must not:
Threaten anyone, using swear words or behave in a way that could cause harassment, alarm or distress to anyone within the London Borough of Bromley.
Say or do anything in a public place meaning to make people feel unsafe or feel their property could be damaged.
Be in any group of three or more persons in a public place in the London Borough of Bromley and behave in a way mentioned in the Order.
Aim, throw or threaten to throw any stone, ball or any other missile, at a person, property or vehicle.
Light fires or fireworks in any public area or open space.
Drink alcohol or be drunk or take illegal drugs of any kind in a public place.
Contact directly or indirectly any named witnesses.
Egg others on to do anything mentioned in the Order.
Members of the public are encouraged to tell the police if they see John Rye doing any of the things prohibited by the interim ASBO and they should be assured that none of their details have to be made public. If he breaches the conditions, he could face imprisonment not exceeding five years or a fine or both. He is due to appear in court again in April.
Executive Councillor for Public Protection and Safety and Chairman of the Safer Bromley Partnership said: ”We hope that this case will send out a clear message to the minority of people who affect the lives of others through their antisocial behaviour that they will not be allowed to get away with it.”
Members of the public troubled by bad behaviour in their locality should talk to their local safer neighbourhood police team (details available at http://www.met.police.uk) or call Bromley Council’s Antisocial Behaviour Team on 020 8461 7907.
