Unemployed in the driving seat

Long-term unemployed adults undergoing training at Bromley Field Studies Centre to help them back into jobs will have a new skill on their c.v., thanks to local driving instructor Steve Harris.
Steve, a driving instructor with Lane’s Driving School has volunteered three hours of his own time without charge each week to work with unemployed adults, helping them to gain driving experience, as lack of a driving licence is a huge barrier to gaining work. Lane’s supported Steve’s efforts, giving him time out of work to do this each week.
Three trainees have been receiving lessons from Steve since he began his weekly sessions last month. One of these is booked to take a theory test soon, with another waiting for a date to take their driving test, and many others keen to follow them.
Jessica Ward, head of countryside and community said: “We are grateful to Steve volunteering his time and knowledge to give our clients the opportunity to gain driving skills. Many jobs, particularly trades such as painting and decorating and construction, require a driving licence and that is a cost beyond most unemployed people. Adding driving to their c.v. makes a huge difference to their employment prospects.
Adults who have been unemployed for over two years are referred to Bromley Field Studies Centre by their Jobcentre Plus Advisors under the New Deal retraining scheme. There are currently 63 clients in training and each will attend for 13 weeks. As well as driving they undertake training in health and safety, basic numeracy and literacy, career development and practical environmental conservation and horticulture. They are also given the opportunity to attend a work placement with a local employment. Last month 10 trainees found work.
