main content Cycling fun day at Norman Park

31 May 2007

A free fun day is being held in Norman Park, Bromley to celebrate Bike Week, the UK’s annual celebration of cycling. Beginners through to experienced cyclists are being invited to come and enjoy everything ‘bike’. The event, run by Bromley Council’s Road Safety Unit, is being held on Saturday 16th June from 9.30am to 3pm. The fun day compliments advice and training provided by Bromley’s Road Safety Officers for resident’s of all ages throughout the year. Those interested should contact the Council for further information.

“Cycling is a fun way to exercise, either alone or with friends and family. It also helps to reduce traffic congestion and pollution. We want to inspire more people to think about using cycling as a travel option. Riding safely is obviously the key priority for us and a number of events on the day will encourage our riders to develop this skill.” said Jo Luff, Cycling Officer at Bromley Council.

This year, young participants will be able to take part in the ‘great de-stabiliser challenge’ where they will attempt to ride a bike without using their stabilisers for the first time. Older children (those 8 years plus) will also be able to learn basic bike skills* to gain more control on their bikes and be safer on the road. Other events taking place will include:

  • escorted adult rides*
  • stunt demonstration with Rich Johnson, extreme stunt rider
  • free bike and helmet checks
  • a chance to win a bike in the great balloon race
  • face painting, refreshments and a bouncy castle.

*These events need to be booked in advance by telephoning the Road Safety Unit on 020 8313 4579.

Qualified Road Safety Officers are able to provide cycle training courses to suit all ages and abilities. For more information contact the Road Safety Unit by calling 020 8313 4546, emailing road.safety@bromley.gov.uk or visiting www.bromley.gov.uk/roadsafety.
