Bromley Army Cadet Force project wins award
News from the Safer Bromley Partnership…
A trail-blazing project introduced by Bromley Council in partnership with the 10th Regiment South London Army Cadet Force (ACF) has won a national award for partnership working.
Presented at the annual ceremony at the Star and Garter home in Richmond, the awards recognise ACF and partnership projects that have demonstrated excellence across the whole of the UK.
Bromley’s winning Army Cadet Force Outreach Project was piloted just over a year ago to help channel the energies of young people interested in outdoor activities and who may have challenging behaviour or difficulty at school. Young people taking part in the scheme have the opportunity to learn new skills and improve within a disciplined and structured environment. The emphasis is on ‘earning’ a place and demonstrating a commitment to the group.
Youngsters are taught a variety of skills ranging from rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking, mastering the assault course and how to live outdoors. More than 60 students aged 12 and 13 have now taken part in the programme and more courses are planned in November.
Chairman of the Safer Bromley Partnership, Cllr Colin Bloom, said: “This award is a fine reflection of partnership working between Bromley Council, the Army Cadet Force, schools and, of course, the young people themselves. The award reflects the calibre of the course, those organising it and, in particular, it reflects well on the young people taking part who have worked hard to show what they can do with help and guidance from skilled instructors. It’s a good team effort all round.”
