main content Christmas shopping at your library

27 November 2007

Christmas shopping just got a whole lot easier for book lovers or those looking for the ideal gift to post for friends and family. In response to customer demand, six libraries in Beckenham, Biggin Hill, Chislehurst, Petts Wood, Orpington and West Wickham will begin displaying and selling National Book tokens from December 1st.

In the last ten years, sales of National Book Tokens have increased by 47%, with about £30 million now sold each year. They are a very strong national brand, recognised in practically every bookshop in the UK and Republic of Ireland.

David Brockhurst, acting assistant director, Libraries and Lifelong Learning, said: “Making it easy to buy a recognised brand of book tokens is an obvious improvement to the range of services we can offer for our customers, particularly those who have limited mobility. We also hope it will encourage more people of all ages to venture through their local library doors, and find out about all the other things on offer, such as borrowing DVDs and CDs or using the People’s Network.”

It is planned to sell the book tokens for six months in these libraries, and then an evaluation will be made on extending the service.

Whether it’s Jeremy Clarkson in Aberdeen or Nigella Lawson in Penzance, someone, somewhere would like a book token from you.
