main content Carpet store fined for illegal signs

26 November 2007

A well-known carpet store has been prosecuted for illegally fixing advertising signs to street furniture outside their premises in Sevenoaks Way, Orpington. Carpetright pleaded guilty to the charge at Bromley Magistrates’ Court and was ordered to pay fines and costs totalling £1,815.

“We cannot allow unauthorised signs to be attached to bollards, lamp columns or any other type of street furniture. Not only do they spoil the appearance of our environment, but they can damage street furniture and are a dangerous distraction for drivers” said Peter Turvey, Enforcement and Technical Support Manager.

The court heard that during a routine inspection of Sevenoaks Way in June, an Enforcement Officer found four Carpetright advertising signs illegally attached to two metal bollards on the pavement outside their store. The store had been warned about the illegal signs previously and had been convicted of similar offences on six separate occasions.

If companies need to place directional signs on the road they should contact the Council, otherwise the signs will be removed and legal action taken.
