Creating vibrant and thriving town centres is a major priority for the Council as a key part of the vision to Build a Better Bromley. Following consultation on wide-ranging options and opportunities held early in 2006, a joint meeting of the Executive and the Development Control Committee (DCC) has approved revised preferred options for further public consultation.

Views put forward during the six-week consultation from 31 October to 11 December will feed into a draft Area Action Plan (AAP), which once formally adopted will provide a long-term framework for development and environmental enhancements. These revised options identify opportunity sites for new or improved shopping, leisure, community, faith and health facilities, as well as additional housing.

Council Leader Stephen Carr said “We recognised some time ago that we needed to take action to rejuvenate the town centre and these options present an exciting new vision for Bromley town centre, shaping its future economic growth and enhancing its competitive position. An AAP creates opportunities for modern development while respecting Bromley’s distinct character and heritage, and will make the town a more attractive place to live, work, and visit for people of all ages.”

Gordon Jenkins, chairman of Development Control Committee said “An Area Action Plan will allow us to encourage planning applications that contribute to the Council’s overall vision for the town’s future, rather than in isolation. The Council will have the opportunity to approve the final AAP proposals next year, taking into account comments from the public and key stakeholders on these revised preferred options.”

Council officers will be available to give further information in The Glades (upper floor, near Boots) on Thursday 1st November from 9am – 9pm. A display will also be available for viewing at the Civic Centre and library during the consultation period. Leaflets summarising the revised preferred options will be widely distributed around the town and to key stakeholders, and all those who registered have previously registered their interest will be contacted. They will also be available at all libraries and the Civic Centre, where copies of the complete document and sustainability appraisal will be available to view.

Editors Notes:

The AAP will be one of Bromley Council’s first Development Plan Documents (DPD) under the new planning system, known as the Local Development Framework (LDF), and as such will be subject to independent public inquiry, as it will introduce new policies to the adopted Unitary Development Plan (UDP). It is likely to be adopted in 2008.

Planning consultants EDAW were appointed to develop the Area Action Plan. Working alongside are retail experts Donaldsons to ensure that recommendations reflect current market demand. Peter Brett Associates are advising on transport strategy.
