An award for developing a pioneering approach to training to improve health and safety in the construction industry, has been won by Bromley Council. The inaugural regional awards dinner for London and the South East, jointly organised by Constructing Excellence and the South East Centre for the Built Environment, was held on September 28. Bromley Council will now go through to a national final to be held in October. The awards are designed to showcase excellence and recognise organisations and project teams that have achieved regional acclaim

Overall numbers of deaths in the construction industry are rising. A central e-learning based resource has been developed by the Council to provide easy access to essential health and safety training to the whole of the construction, design and management community in public services to raise the safety culture and reduce injury and fatalities.

Having developed essential training for its own construction teams to meet new construction, design and management regulations, the Council created the web based portal where all public service organisations can participate in the training locally. Consulting with the Health and Safety Executive, the Council have developed the training further, all with the aim of cutting accidents and saving lives.

Said Doug Patterson, Chief Executive of Bromley Council:
“The Council is privileged to be supporting the competences of local authority personnel in construction safety across the country. Public organisations are responsible for much of the Government infrastructure, from building new roads to the maintenance of the local leisure centre. Winning this award confirms that we are on target with meeting this need, which we hope will move all public organisation towards safer construction environments.”

Andrew East of the Health and Safety Executive said: “This is a clear example of the public sector showing leadership in ensuring sensible risk management in the construction work they are responsible for in their communities.”
