Benefit Fraudster Prosecuted
A benefit fraudster was sentenced in July 2007 at Bromley Magistrates Court bringing the total prosecuted to 116 since the inception of Bromley Council’s partnership with Greenwich Council in April 2002.
Council Leader Stephen Carr said “We are pleased that this prosecution was as a result of further joint working with another agency. Where possible, the pooling of resources to fight fraud is an effective method in achieving success.”
Joy Roper, 43, of Cintra Park, Anerley, pleaded guilty to defrauding Bromley Council and the Department for Works and Pensions of benefits totalling £3,847 over a nine month period between 2004 and 2005. She had failed to declare her employment whilst claiming benefits. She was sentenced to a 100 hour Community Punishment Order.
The Council is in the process of recovering its £2,482 share of council tax and housing benefits overpayment.
