main content Sunday Opening for Bromley Central Library

18 September 2007

From 7th October, Bromley Central library will pilot opening on Sundays from 1pm to 5pm, until 30 March 2008*, to see whether these extended hours will attract new customers to the library. The full range of services will be on offer, including:

  • books for loan, including large print editions
  • information services
  • free use of PCs and Wifi access
  • local studies
  • DVDs, CDs and audio books

This library receives more than 650,000 visits each year, and as research has shown that libraries draw people into shopping areas, it is anticipated that Sunday library visitors will also make use of the retail and leisure facilities on offer while they are in the town centre, bringing added economic benefits.

Julian Benington, executive councillor for local economy said: “We have made a number of improvements in library services for our customers over the last year, in line with changing expectations. Sunday opening in Bromley will undoubtedly be extremely popular for those who wish to use it for study, research, IT or just the traditional lending service. It will make our busiest library available seven days a week. Other changes, such as the introduction of a no-fee reservation service, wifi access for personal laptops, and the new mobile library vehicle and route, have enhanced ‘the library experience’ for many.”

An assessment will be carried out following the six-month pilot, and recommendations made to the executive councillor for local economy regarding extended hours.
