A team of girls from Newstead Wood School in Orpington has won the ‘2008 Fully Booked’ children’s literature quiz. The quiz, organized by Bromley’s library service, tested groups of young people from the borough’s secondary schools on their knowledge of children’s books. It is the first event in Bromley as part of the National Year of Reading campaign, aimed at changing attitudes to all types of reading, including newsprint and on-screen as well as books.

Teams of Year 8 students from ten Bromley secondary schools took part in the quiz which was held at Bromley Central Library. Newstead Wood took the trophy by just five points by answering questions such as “What is the only book by Roald Dahl to have a girl’s name in the title?” Bishop Justus CE School was the runner up, with St Olave’s Grammar School and Langley Park School for Girls tying in third place.

Ian Dodds, development manager for the library, archive and museum service said: “The Fully Booked quiz is an important part of the library service’s work with young readers in Bromley. There was a real competitive buzz in the hall during the quiz, but above all it was great fun and encourages the young people involved to read more widely which, after all, is what the National Year of Reading is about” .
