Targeting fly tipping in Cotmandene Crescent
As part of a crackdown on fly tipping, the Cotmandene Crescent area is being closely monitored after it was identified as one of the borough’s “hot spots” for illegally dumped waste. Twenty-six people have been caught fly tipping in or near Cotmandene Crescent car park since October last year. The car park is one of five seasonal weekend sites run by the council as a local collection point for residents green garden waste. Collection sites are now re-open for the season.
“We are warning people not to leave their waste, even if it is grass cuttings or pruning's, at any of the collection sites if it’s after the closing time or on the wrong day, as they could risk prosecution. We are trying to avoid any confusion and prevent residents making genuine mistakes. That’s why we are putting up information signs at the sites” said Peter Turvey, Enforcement and Technical Support Manager.
Of the 26 people caught fly tipping in the Cotmandene Crescent area, 6 people have been issued with an £80 fixed penalty notice, and 19 have received warnings. One incident is still under investigation.
Householders are reminded to take reasonable measures to ensure any waste produced on their property, including green garden waste, is only passed on to an authorised waste carrier for disposal. This guarantees that the rubbish will be disposed of legally and safely and not fly tipped. Householders could be fined a maximum of £5000 if their waste is fly tipped by an unauthorised person.
A fortnightly green garden waste collection service is provided by the Council, for a small charge. Stickers, to attach to bags of green garden waste, can be bought from libraries and the Civic Centre for £1 each. Collection must be arranged by calling the freephone hotline 0800 389 3804 Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
