main content Don't be a fire starter

05 August 2008

Residents and visitors to Bromley are given an important message about fire prevention in a new campaign launched by the Safer Bromley Partnership this summer.

More outdoor fires are recorded in Bromley every year than in any other London borough. This year’s campaign – Don’t be a Fire starter, points out the dangers of dropping lighted cigarette butts, barbecuing in open spaces and starting deliberate fires which can easily run out of control during a dry summer.

Posters will be displayed in newsagents and flyers with advice on using parks and open spaces sensibly along with portable ashtrays will be given out to spread the word.

Fire Station Manager Martin Corbett said: “We hope to reduce outdoor fires this year by making people aware of the dangers of starting fires whether by accident or deliberately. Fire kills and destroys wildlife and our natural surroundings. With a little thought, I’m convinced the people of Bromley can make a difference to our unacceptably high figures for outdoor fires.”

Cllr Colin Bloom Chairman of the Safer Bromley Partnership said: “I’m happy for the Partnership to support this worthwhile initiative to raise awareness of the dangers of how easily fires can get out of hand. If together with communities around the borough we can stop even a proportion of these careless and deliberate fires then we have taken an important step towards a safer borough for us all to enjoy.”
