Council tax 2008/09 confirmed
The Bromley part of the Council tax will rise by 4.3% in 2008/09, following full Council’s agreement last night with Executive’s recommendations earlier this month. Combined with the Greater London Authority (GLA) precept increase of 2%, Bromley residents are likely to continue to benefit from one of the lowest council tax levels in outer London next year, with an expected total increase of 3.7% overall.
In recommending the budget, Councillor Stephen Carr, Leader of the Council, said:
“This is a forward looking budget, despite continued under funding by central government. It builds on our efforts to Build a Better Bromley to date, does not call on our reserves and most importantly reflects what residents have told us matters most to them. In addition to the usual services we provide, we’re putting more into environmental improvement initiatives this year. We’re also setting up a community fund, building on existing efforts to ensure the future development and wellbeing of all our residents. But with financial pressures set to increase we cannot be complacent. So we’ll continue to campaign for a fairer system of funding for the people of Bromley, improve our efficiency and listen to residents as we plan ahead and strive to maintain our pledge of low council tax into the future.”

Notes to editors:
The Council Tax is made up of two parts: the Bromley share which is spent on providing council services and a ‘precept’ collected on behalf of the Greater London Authority. The latter goes towards funding the Metropolitan Police, the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, as well as the core functions of the GLA and Transport for London.
