main content Inspectors award Council three star rating

07 February 2008

Independent inspectors have awarded Bromley Council three stars, out of a possible four, and judged it is “improving well” and that “there are no weaknesses in corporate governance that would prevent further continuous improvement.” The results of the Council’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment, published today, were awarded under the Audit Commission’s harder test framework. Along with local councils across the country the Council was judged on how well it is run and delivers its services to the people who live, work and do business in the borough.

The Audit Commission, an independent government watchdog, found the Council is ‘well above minimum requirements – performing strongly’ in its use of resources and ‘performing well’ in providing value for money. It found it is performing well against it’s Building a Better Bromley priorities and remarked favourably on a number of areas. These included:

  • increases in recycling and educational attainment
  • decreases in crime and waste
  • making ‘good progress’ in implementing its improvement plans
  • significant improvements to it’s Youth Service
  • good work with partners to increase paid employment for adults with learning disabilities
  • improving access to care options through the council’s new brokerage scheme
  • improved performance of Youth Offending Team

Said Council Leader, Stephen Carr: “As we strive to Build a Better Bromley I am delighted that under this tougher test the Audit Commission has awarded us three stars. It has recognised a number of real improvements in many of our services and, most importantly, that we are providing value for money. We are improving well and are determined to do so despite the low level of funding from government. However, our greatest test is how we are seen in the eyes of our residents and I am delighted that the latest survey showed that residents’ satisfaction with Bromley as a place to live has increased from 76% to 80%.”
