main content Refocus your skills

22 February 2008

The ‘refocus’ training programme is a free course, offering training in horticultural and conservation skills for lone parents and people on incapacity benefits. The course runs for a period of 6 weeks and is held at the ‘TrEE Centre’ in Scadbury Park Nature Reserve in Chislehurst, part of the Bromley Field Studies Centre, which co-ordinates the course.

“The course is really flexible – individuals are encouraged to develop a timetable to suit their own individual needs. No prior experience is required, just an interest and lots of enthusiasm. The programme is run in small teams with a dedicated trainer, to ensure participants get much out of the experience as possible.” said Euan Craig, Training Officer.

During the course, participants have the opportunity to expand existing skills and learn new ones, such as strimming, plant cultivation, building bird tables and boxes. One to one advice is also available with a resident support worker as well as careers advice and job search facilities. So far over 60 Bromley residents have benefited from the programme which is run with grant funding from the Deprived Area Fund (DAF).

Applicants need to be age 18 and over and living within the borough. Each participant will receive over twenty hours of training between the hours of 10.30am and 3.30 pm from Monday to Friday, to fit in with existing commitments. On successful completion, attendees will receive a certificate.

Interested residents should contact the Council for further information regarding eligibility and for advice on free child care and travel costs. Contact Euan Craig, Training Officer on 020 8302 7496 or euan.craig@bromley.gov.uk
