main content Competition winners wipe out graffiti

31 January 2008

Creative skills were rewarded when the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Pauline Tunnicliffe presented pupils with prizes of digital cameras today, after winning a anti-graffiti competition. The competition for schools, sponsored by Kier, aimed to deter graffiti by highlighting it as a crime, and explaining the cost of its removal and the damage it does to the environment. Pupils at The Highway and Darrick Wood Schools won the junior and secondary school prizes.

Presenting the awards, the Mayor said “I’m delighted to help celebrate the excellent designs and hard work of young people. It’s wonderful to see them channelling their energies into positive activities and I hope others will be encouraged to do the same”.

Terry Allen,  Kier's General Manager, added “Our crews are out in all weathers, helping to keep the borough clean. Graffiti is an issue that affects us all, and we are pleased that we are improving the environment for people, and proud to sponsor this competition”.

Research shows that if graffiti is removed quickly, it is less likely to occur in future. Tackling graffiti as soon as it appears is the aim of the Council’s “adopt-a-box” scheme. Residents can “adopt” one of Virgin Media’s 3,000 communications boxes to keep an eye on it and keep it free from graffiti. Anyone wishing to join the scheme will be given free paint, help and advice and an “adoption” certificate.
