Young people looking for work can benefit from environment-related job taster sessions through a flexible and free training programme. The weekly ‘Refresh’ scheme, run by the Bromley Field Studies Centre, also offers 16-18 year old participants the opportunity to improve their numeracy and literacy skills through recognised qualifications equivalent to GCSEs.

“Most employers will require job applicants to have at least two GCSE’s, with A-C grades both in maths and English. Our scheme is designed to equip you with the skills and confidence to gain employment. Not only will we cover your expenses, but we will also give you a £200 reward in vouchers for each qualification you achieve on the course” said Louisa Allen, Field Studies Centre Manager.

As part of the programme, the centre is able to offer participants comprehensive careers advice and job search facilities, including practice at interview technique. Students are also offered the opportunity to try a number of job taster sessions ranging from practical conservation work to painting and decorating skills.

The ‘Refresh’ course is held every Friday from 10am to 2.30pm at the Bromley Field Studies Centre in Orpington. On average, participants take six weeks to complete their training, which includes taking two Level 2 National Test qualifications in literacy and numeracy – equivalent to two GCSEs grades A-C. The course is open to Bromley residents age 16-18 that are not currently in employment or training and do not have a grade A-C GCSE in English or maths.
