Residential development is deferred
The Development Control Committee last night voted to defer a planning application from Broomleigh Housing Association for a residential scheme on a site at the junction of Tweedy Road and London Road.
Councillor Alexa Michael, chairman of Development Control Committee said:
“Although this site is designated for residential use in existing development guidelines and the emerging Area Action plan, the committee’s view was that the application as submitted did not adequately take into account the sensitivity of the site in relation to the historic buildings nearby or to the area generally. We want to see a revised scheme that is reduced in height and size, includes more soft landscaping and provides more car parking. Members also expressed concerns about the proposed design, so it is essential it is changed to be more in keeping with the locality.”
The application was for four linked blocks situated providing 98 new dwellings, with a mix of rented and privately owned flats. Most of the social rented units would form a ‘Foyer’ scheme of studio flats for vulnerable young people aged 16-25, giving them access to education, training and employment opportunities.
