School planning application approved

A secondary school planning application submitted by Kier Construction was approved at Wednesday’s Development Control Committee meeting.

The application to build the Bullers Wood for Boys Secondary School on St Hugh’s Playing Fields in Bickley Road was approved with highway and road safety measures to be included in the planning conditions and subject to the completion of a legal agreement.

Councillor Peter Dean, Chairman of Development Control Committee said, “This was a very difficult, finely balanced decision, with many persuasive points raised on both sides of the debate.  The committee recognised the overriding need for additional secondary school places, with the additional highway and road safety conditions being imposed to help address the concerns raised.”

Over 1000 people responded to the council’s consultation about the proposal to build a six form entry secondary boys school accommodating up to 900 pupils.  The part two and part three storey building application for Bullers Wood for Boys also included the creation of a new vehicular access on Chislehurst Road and 69 parking spaces.

The Mayor of London has stated that the application would need to be referred back to him for direction following the committee decision. The application will also need to be referred to the Secretary of State as a result of Sport England objections.

Kier Construction had previously submitted a planning application to build a secondary school on St Hugh’s Playing Fields which was rejected in January 2017.
