The end of the road for Chislehurst Road Bridge

Published on

With only one week to go until the closure of Chislehurst Road Bridge (A208), advanced warning signs are in place and motorists are being advised to avoid the area.

Preparatory works on the bridge re-build are now well underway. The vegetation on the embankment has been cleared, and steps along with an access footpath for the rail track below are now complete. Variable Message Signs (VMS) and diversion route signs are also now in place to advise motorists of the road closure and the diversion route.

"The first few weeks in particular are going to prove extremely difficult if people don't turn of their Sat Navs and start paying greater attention to the road signage and traffic warnings given out through the regional media. The undiluted message we're trying to get out to all non locals without valid business interests in the area is please, just stay away during the rush hours until further notice. All you will achieve if you ignore the warnings is an inconvenient delay to your own journey and cause further disruption for everybody else", said Councillor Colin Smith, Executive Councillor for the Environment.

Jon Elliott, Construction Manager, HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction said, "The road will close in the early hours of Monday 7 November. Road closure signs will be erected the previous night with cones and barriers being installed to close the road. After that it will be down to fine tuning, depending what issues arise once the road has been closed".

The road will be closed for an estimated 12 months whilst the bridge is being re-built. A diversion route will be in place for the duration of the re-build project, which will take drivers along Leesons Hill, Cray Avenue and Poverest Road or Poverest Road , Cray Avenue and Leesons Hill in the opposite direction. This is the same route currently used by buses and HGVs due to the bridge's present 7.5 ton weight limit.
