Works progress on Chislehurst Road Bridge

Chislehurst Road Bridge re-building work progresses with traffic measures reviewed, one month into its closure.

Preparatory works on the re-build are nearing completion, with the first stage of demolition due to commence early in the New Year. Traffic has been monitored closely following the road closure and a number of additional traffic management measures have recently been implemented to keep traffic flow moving on the diversion route.

"We have now had the opportunity to review the effect of the diversion on traffic congestion and to listen to the views of residents and motorists. We are working hard to install further traffic measures to ease congestion on certain pinch points of the diversion route such as Station Approach. We will continue to keep close watch on any developments and act accordingly", said Councillor Colin Smith, Executive Councillor for Environment.

Jon Elliott, Construction Manager, HOCHTIEF (UK) Construction, said "The hoarding works are complete and the site area is now able to allow full construction activities. We are busy constructing the trestles and slide tracks for the temporary bridge structure and the installation of temporary beams under-deck is also underway. With progress such as it is, the first stage of demolition looks to be on track".

Illuminated signage is being installed on Sevenoaks Way , in addition to the signs already in place, to enforce the ban on right hand turns into Leesons Hill. The Police have also been enforcing the bans as part of their routine duties.

Other measures have included re-phasing the traffic lights at the junction of Leesons Hill and Sevenoaks Way to allow more cars out of Leesons Hill in any one sequence. The suspended bus lane on Cray Avenue has been resurfaced, between Poverest Road and Leesons Hill, to encourage more motorists to use both lanes. The Council is also in the process of investigating the possibility of some additional parking restrictions in Station Approach.

A web camera to track progress of the works has also been installed on site and is available to view along with more information on www.bromley.gov.uk/chislehurstbridge. You can also follow us on www.twitter.com/chislehurstrdbr.
