The Mayor’s Outer London Fund (OLF) has awarded £2 million to Bromley town centre for initiatives to boost the local economy.

The second stage announcement has confirmed funding for Bromley town centre for new projects and additional support for existing town centre initiatives.

"This is very welcome news for Bromley town centre and we will invest this money wisely to support our ongoing work and best position our town.  This year is already proving to be critical with a number of exciting projects underway that will ultimately drive forward our long term vision to Build a Better Bromley and the competitiveness of our town.  We were disappointed that we were not successful in other town centres but we will continue to work closely with businesses across the borough to support them in these challenging times" said the Leader of Bromley Council, Councillor Stephen Carr.

The funding will see additional public realm improvements to the High Street in Bromley town centre and promotional initiatives.  These events, which will include a festival of sport and an arts event, are designed to increase footfall and vibrancy.  Funding for Beckenham and Penge town centres was not allocated.  Penge town centre was allocated £70,000 in round one of the Outer London Fund.

Councillor Peter Morgan, Executive Councillor for Renewal and Recreation, added: "We are obviously very disappointed that we were unsuccessful in Beckenham but businesses and residents can be assured that the town has an exciting future.  We are committed to improving the town where we can and we will explore all avenues including Council budgets and existing or future Section 106 payments to finance initiatives.  We have also reconvened the Beckenham town centre working party to examine the future of Beckenham, who will report back quickly with viable suggestions for the town centre environment.  Beckenham has a thriving business community and is performing competitively nationally, like other town centres around the borough."

Projects in Beckenham could include:

  • A bid to Transport for London (TfL) for town centre improvements, which could be match funded by the Council
  • Public realm improvements in the High Street
  • Studies and analysis including a traffic survey
