Bromley Council and Safer Bromley Partnership target Mountfield Estate.
Bromley Council together with other key members of the Safer Bromley Partnership targeted environmental and criminal issues on the Mountfield Estate in Orpington on Tuesday 17 January 2012.
The council acted when residents on the estate became concerned about escalating problems with low-level crime such as graffiti, abandoned vehicles and fly tipping which had led to more than an average number of fires in the area blighting the lives of law abiding citizens.
Affinity Sutton and the local police safer neighbourhood team joined the Council's Public Protection team, Area Management and Park Rangers teams during the day long event. Evidence from previous clean ups suggests that this type of multi-agency operation reduces complaints, improves hygiene and cleanliness in the area and leads to a reduction in crimes involving motor vehicles, arson and criminal damage, while enhancing the quality of life for residents in the area.
Aims of the Clean Up operation are:
-
To clear the area of long-term rubbish in and around shops, car parks and alleyways
- Remove abandoned vehicles
- Remove graffiti on buildings
- Raise awareness among the community about these matters
- Set up a join agency approach to prevent further nuisance and to detect offenders
- General policing operation regarding disorder and antisocial behaviour.
During the day, the council and Affinity Sutton washed 28 sq metres of graffiti and smoke damage from properties and disposed of more than twelve lorry loads of rubbish and old furniture, 56 large sacks of litter, and even an entire mature tree trunk felled and concealed in an alleyway.
Public Protection and Safety Portfolio Holder Cllr Tim Stevens said: "The day was a great success in making sure that the area has a good clean sweep, while police have been able to gather intelligence about those who might be held responsible for the crimes. We trust that this operation will provide a perfect foundation for local residents to carry on the good work so that everyone on the Mountfield Estate can enjoy a clean and pleasant environment."
