Care Homes (Residential and Nursing Care)
Care homes provide long-term care for people who can no longer remain safely at home even with support. There are 3 types of care home: care homes that provide accommodation, meals and twenty-four hour personal care and attention but do not provide care for people who need nursing support; care homes with nursing that look after people who need regular nursing care, which can only be provided by a qualified nurse or under the direct supervision of a qualified nurse; and care homes that are registered to provide both residential and nursing care, which enables a wide range of services to be given.

Do you meet the social services criteria for help? If so, a care manager from Social Services & Housing will come and assess your needs. There is a range of care homes in Bromley for:
- older people;
- adults with learning disabilities;
- adults with physical disabilities or sensory impairment;
- adults with mental health problems;
- adults and older people with dementia.
Care homes with nursing must have a registered nurse on duty at all times.
Some people may choose a care home that provides both residential and nursing care so that if their health deteriorates, they do not need to move. Couples with differing care needs can also stay together in such homes.

Older people whom care managers have assessed as needing long term care in a care home will automatically receive a copy of the directory in a Placement Pack.
Whether your stay in a care home is temporary or permanent, the council must carry out an assessment of your needs to confirm that you require care in a care home, before you can get help with the cost.
You are entitled to a care assessment even if you have over £22,250 and are able to pay the full cost of a care home yourself you can get advice about the care you require and information about how to find and fund your care
The council will arrange placements for people to enter care homes who are unable to make their own arrangements or who have no-one willing and able to assist them.

- people who are paid for by the council; and
- those who are funding their own care home place.

Cost
If you enter a care home or care home with nursing as a result of requesting help from social services , you will have to contribute towards the cost of the service. The amount you have to pay will depend on your financial circumstances:
- If you have capital assets of more than £22,250 or are making your own private arrangements you will have to pay the full cost of your care and accommodation excluding nursing care, which will be met by the Health Service
- If your savings and capital assets are less than £22,250 you will be assessed to pay a financial contribution towards the cost of your care and Bromley Council will pay the balance of the fees. There are limits on the amount Bromley Council will usually pay for a place in a care home unless you have exceptional needs which can only be met by a specialist provider.
Care homes with nursing
The NHS will meet the costs of nursing care for all residents who have been assessed as requiring nursing care. This means that the NHS will pay that part of the total fee of a care home with nursing, which relates to the care provided by a registered nurse.
These arrangements apply to all residents of care homes with nursing; including those who receive financial support from local councils as well as those who pay the whole cost of their care themselves (who have been eligible for this support since October 2001).
Bromley NHS Primary Care Trust nurses will assess the level of nursing care you require in order to determine what level of funding the NHS will contribute.
