Day-time activities, education and work opportunities for adults with mental health needs
There are various opportunities for people with mental health needs living in Bromley. Day services are available and mostly organised by MIND, whilst the WorkNet project promotes education, training and work placements to help people get future employment.
Who could benefit from/use these services?
Adults whose daily life is affected by mental ill health, and their carers.
To access these services you should meet the following criteria:
- You should be a resident of the Borough and/or registered with a GP in the Borough; or
- homeless having been a resident in the Borough; or
- a temporary resident of the Borough; and
- you have ongoing mental illness or acute mental illness needing specialist services.
There are extra criteria about levels of risk, disability, and the level of care you need to remain stable as a result of suffering from mental ill health. Details can be found in The Care Programme Approach Procedural Guidance, which is available on the Oxleas NHS Trust website.

Details
The WorkNet scheme is run by a partnership group providing a range of services to help people with mental health needs into education and work. The group is funded by the European Union, the European Social Fund and the Crystal Palace Partnership. Groups involved include Connexions, employment services and the following organisations:
Oxleas NHS Trust
LINK UP2 Oxleas NHS Trust is a programme which can help you get work experience and to keep a paid job within Oxleas NHS Trust and partner organisations.
Horizon House
If you are 18-65 years of age, have had a severe and ongoing mental health disability for over a year and want to return to work then Oxleas NHS Trust’s Horizon House scheme could help you. You can regain your confidence and self worth by helping to run this clubhouse. Work placements can also be arranged for you in the local community.
Bromley Social Services
Social services can help you as part of the WorkNet Scheme by providing personal assessments, advice and support relating to social needs, activities and training that have been planned to develop your future goals. Staff at social services also provide a link between other members of the WorkNet scheme.
Orpington College
The college runs a course specifically for people who find it difficult to return to education or work due to mental health issues. You can learn computing and work towards a CLAIT Level 1 qualification, study a variety of subjects at the college and develop your job search skills. You can also get extra support with reading, writing and maths or if English is not your first language.
Hawthorn Centre (Bromley College of Further and Higher Education)
A specialist course at this centre concentrates on improving communication and social skills, computing, reading, writing, maths, and job search skills. If you want to attend mainstream education you can receive help by working with trained counsellors.
Bromley MIND
Bromley MIND provides training in catering, health and hygiene and volunteering as well as benefits advice for WorkNet clients thinking about getting back into work.
Status Employment Ltd
Status Employment Ltd helps find paid jobs for people who have had or have mental health problems. Both you and your employer receive a unique package of support to help deal with any issues. You can also take at least one job on a trial basis to make sure you and your employer are happy with the arrangement.
Bromley User Group
This group helps people with mental health difficulties live independently and have a better quality of life by developing plans to manage day-to-day living. If you are interested in education, training or working under the WorkNet scheme and are from an ethnic or refugee community, then this group may be of particular help to you. An outreach service is available to make sure you get the information you need and provides you with a support network tailored to meet your needs.
Community Links
This organisation offers many projects to support people with mental health needs, including volunteering opportunities in office work and administration, befriending and working within the Community Links shops.
Costs
There are no costs for services available under the WorkNet scheme.
