main content Responsible dog ownership

Most dog owners are responsible people.  We want to encourage all dog owners to follow their example, so that the borough's open spaces are safe and pleasant for everyone.

In consultation with the public, and with local and national dog organisations such as the Dogs Trust, we are now changing the way we tackle irresponsible dog ownership.

Details

We are making no changes to where dogs are currently allowed in the borough, so please follow the signage in place for guidance.  But we are changing the way that we deal with irresponsible dog ownership.  From 1st April 2010, you could get a fixed penalty notice for:

  • failing to clean up after your dog in public places
  • allowing your dog to enter areas where dogs are excluded
  • letting your dog off the lead in areas where this is restricted
  • failing to put your dog on a lead when an authorised officer tells you to.

People who have assistance dogs trained by a prescribed charity are excempt from the Dog Control Orders, which, among other things, require owners to clean up after their dogs.

For further information, please see our 'how to be a responsible dog owner' leaflet.
