We use personal injury accident data recorded by the police to highlight problem sites by looking at where clusters of accidents appear and the causes of these accidents.
Whilst we are the largest London Borough, with the largest road network and one of the highest car ownerships, accidents have continued to decline over a number of years. In 2008, which is the last full year of data available, there were 683 accidents resulting in 865 casualties. Of these casualties 14 were fatalities and 126 were serious injuries. We are aiming to reduce road casualties by 50%, by 2010.
Further information about our accident reduction policies and initiatives are available in our Road Safety Plan 2008/2009.
The information obtained from the accident details is used by a variety of people, both in and out of Bromley Council:
- by Road Safety Officers and Traffic Engineers in prioritising and targeting problem sites.
- by Road Safety Officers to decide routes for the walking bus scheme and safer routes to school.
- by Road Safety Officers when working in local schools on statistics projects as part of the traffic education scheme.
- by local residents requesting details of accidents on a particular road.
- by consultancy and engineering firms in the planning stages of a project and solicitors requesting details of accidents on a particular road. The charge to businesses is £35.
