The Road Safety Unit conducts free child cycle training so that children are able to cycle on the road with confidence and safely. It is now divided into three elements – in line with national Standards. These are known as Bromley Level 1, 2 and 3. All training is free to children who live or go to school in the Borough.

Details

There are different levels of child cycle training.

Level 1 is a basic control level where, after having their helmet checked for fit and their bike checked for roadworthiness, children will be trained to ride their bike under control. This will include the use of gears, riding giving signals and negotiating obstacles. This training is off road and is mostly offered to pupils in year five of primary schools.

A Level 2 course will teach your child how to cycle safely on the road. They will learn the skills involved, including making turns, overtaking parked vehicles and knowing how to perform an emergency stop. There is also a theory test during the course. The course lasts for a day and a half. This level 2 training is available to children in year six and above.

Level 3 is available to those young children who have successfully completed level 2 training. Children will be accompanied by an instructor on a route to suit their needs and will include whatever types of road, junction and level of traffic is present on the agreed route.
