What is Level 1?

Level 1 courses are arranged between the Road Safety Unit and local schools. They are offered to children in year five. The half-day training takes place on the playground and teaches children basic skills such as bike control, how to signal and how to avoid obstacles. If you would like your child to take part please contact your child's head teacher.

What is Level 2?

A Level 2 course takes place over one and a half days.

The first morning training is an assessment including a theory test and basic bike skills in the safety of a school playground (this is in effect Level 1).

The first afternoon of practical training takes place on the road including left and right turns at junctions.  The following morning, after the child has had a chance to consolidate the learning, they can practise the turns. We will assess the children throughout the morning to determine whether they are of a safe standard to pass the course.

To successfully complete the training and receive a cycling proficiency badge and certificate your child must pass both the theory and the on-road test.  If your child fails either the theory or the practical part of the test they can come back and retake that part again.

Level 2 is only available to children who are in year six or above. Your child does not have to attend a Level 1 course before applying for a Level 2.

Please contact us if you would like your child to attend one of these courses.

What is Level 3?

Level 3 is for children who have passed the Level 2 course and would like to have a further training to be more confident on busier roads or a particular route, maybe to school. This is arranged on an individual basis by contacting the Road Safety Unit.

If your child has not passed Level 2 (or the old style cycling proficiency) then our family cycle courses are available. See our adult and family page for more details.

When do these courses take place?

Level 1 courses take place during term time only. Level 2 courses take place either in term time or holiday periods.

Where are the courses?

We run the courses at various schools across the borough. Term time courses are only open to children who attend the particular school. However, holiday courses are available to all children who live or go to school in the Bromley Borough. We try to spread the courses evenly so you can always find a course near to your child's home or school.

How safe are the courses?

We insist that every child wears their helmet. We supply children with a yellow tabard which must be worn at all times during the training.

Level 2 courses have a minimum of two adults supervising to a maximum of twelve children. All roads and junctions are assessed for their safety before we use them.

Every child's bike is checked at the start of training. To help you ensure your child's bike is safe we will send you a voucher for a free check at a local bike shop.

How much do the courses cost?

All the courses are free to children who live or go to school in Bromley Borough.
