main content Driving a minibus - FAQs

What is classed as a minibus?

A minibus is a vehicle with between 9 and 16 seats (including the drivers seat). With over 16 seats it is a coach.

Why should I take an assessment?

If your vehicle is insured by the London Borough of Bromley's policy you MUST take our assessment.

The minimum we suggest is a one-hour training session. This will incorporate a short test at the end.

What does the D1 test involve?

The D1 test is a driving test conducted by the Driving Standards Agency (the same people who do the car learner tests).  The test is similar to the test taken by coach drivers, only the vehicle you drive is a minibus.

The standard required is extremely high and will need specific training. This training is available through the Road Safety Unit.

How much training will I need to reach D1 standard?

That will depend on your standard of driving. We offer a one-hour assessment to work out how much training you will need to reach D1 standard.

How much will it cost?

The charge is £38 per hour per instructor, regardless of the number of participants.

You must provide the minibus.

Can more than one person go out on the training?

Yes, typically one person takes one hour and two people one and half hours.
