Moped and scooter rider safety
‘Powered Two Wheelers,’ or scooters, are very popular with young teenagers as a means of independent travelling. Unfortunately they are also amongst the high statistics of road crashes. Bromley's Road Safety Officers are tackling this with a course of sessions in secondary schools, aimed at reducing these figures.
Our course is held in secondary schools at the age when young people are just starting to think about getting a powered two wheeler. Inexperience combined with the exuberances of youth can be a lethal mix. We try to explain how vulnerable they are and how they need to look out for others who don’t look out for them.
In around 65% of 'right of way' incidents, (when a driver pulls out in the path of a rider) a driver somehow fails to see a motorcyclist who should be in clear view.
During the course pupils are encouraged to discuss and consider bad behaviour such as drinking and driving, speeding, injudicious overtaking and risk taking. We use images of crashes and videos of parents who have lost children in road crashes, which are always a powerful tool and have a very sobering effect on the class.
