Young drivers are vulnerable as they are less experienced and subsequently tend to have more accidents than older, more experienced drivers. Statistics show that one in five young drivers crash within one year of passing their test. Getting the correct training, before and after taking your driving test, can reduce the chances of being involved in a crash.

Road Safety Officers give ‘pre-driver’ training sessions in sixth forms at schools and colleges across the borough. The issues discussed include risk taking such as drink or drug driving, not wearing seatbelts and speeding.

Once students have completed our course they are entitled to a free driving lesson with College School of Motoring who are delighted to be able to support Road Safety.

Further information on our work in schools is available here.

Learner drivers will benefit from driving lessons from a qualified instructor as well as driving with a family member. Remember, as a learner:

  • You cannot drive on the motorway
  • You must display 'L' plates
  • You cannot drive a car unless accompanied by someone over 21 who has had a full driving licence for at least three years

More information and advice for learner drivers is available on the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) website

Have you recently passed your driving test? Remember, if you receive six or more penalty points in the next two years, you will lose your licence and will have to take the test again. Statistics show you are most at risk of having an accident in the two years after you pass your test. You will lose your licence if you increase that risk by committing offences like speeding.

Once you have passed your driving test it is important to keep improving your skills. You could take some more lessons and become Pass Plus qualified. Not only can you get big insurance discounts for taking Pass Plus, but can also get £70 off the cost of the lessons refunded by Transport for London. To qualify you must be aged 17 to 25, have passed your test within the last 12 months and live in a London Borough. You must also take the lessons with a driving school that is part of the scheme.
