Gritting the roads in winter
We are continuing to monitor weather conditions closely in light of the recent snow and icy weather. Our gritting fleet and snow clearance teams are on 24 hour standby to react to predicted adverse weathers, to ensure that main roads are free from ice and snow.
We use detailed local forecasts from the London Met Office to predict when frost or ice is likely to form on the road surface.

We provide salt bins for you at locations that are not on the priority routes as a self-help facility. To conserve salt supplies, in the recent wintry weather, these bins have been re-filled with grit. Whilst grit provides grip, it does not disolve snow and it remains on the road or pavement when the snow or ice has gone. See the salt bin location list for more details.
We are legally required to treat roads in winter to ensure 'safe passage' as far as is reasonably practical. Our winter service policy sets out how we treat the roads and pavements and a map showing priority gritting routes.
You can download a map of the roads we treat in anticipation of ice or frost and a map of the roads we treat if icy conditions continue into the day. Information about weather conditions is available from the Met Office website.
Please note that Transport for London (TFL) is responsible for gritting Red Routes. In this borough they run along the A21 from the M25 to the Lewisham boundary at Bromley Hill and the A232 from Locksbottom (Croydon Road) to the boundary with Croydon at West Wickham High Street.
