Nationality checking service

Since July 2006 Bromley Register Office has offered a nationality checking service to all applicants for British nationality.

What is the nationality checking service?

The nationality checking service is a partnership between the Home Office nationality group and the London Borough of Bromley. The service ensures that applications for British citizenship are completed correctly. Important documents, which need to accompany the application form, will be checked, copied and certified so applicants can keep the originals. Completed applications will then be forwarded to the Home Office by secure post.

Why should I use this service?

Applications to the Home Office tend to be resolved more quickly if they are correctly completed and have all the correct documents. Using this service, you can have peace of mind that your applications are complete. You will be able to retain your original personal documents including your passport, while your application is under consideration.

How do I use this service?

You should contact our nationality checking service team by telephone on 0300 303 8667.

They will be able to give you more information about the scheme and make an appointment for you to visit the Bromley Register Office to submit your application.

How much does it cost to use the service?

Fees (including VAT) for weekday appointments

  • adult submitting a single application - £70 (£110 at weekends)
  • children (under 18 years) on parents application - £35 per child (£45 at weekends)
  • children (under 18 years) not on parents application - £70 for the first child (£110 at weekends) £35 for each sibling (£45 at weekends)

These fees are valid from 1 April 2018 to 31 March 2019.

We do offer a limited number of weekend appointments. Please contact the office for availability and fees.

Please note : Home Office fees for nationality applications are not included in the fees charged by the London Borough of Bromley for the use of the nationality checking service.

Do I have to use the London Borough of Bromley checking service?

No. You may still choose to forward your application direct to the Home Office yourself or to use a solicitor or other agent if you wish.
