Houses in multiple occupancy

A house in multiple occupation (HMO) is a property which is occupied by people who do not form a single household and who share basic amenities such as bathroom, toilet and kitchen facilities. We have specific powers to ensure they are well-managed and kept in good order.

Legislation change

Private landlords are being reminded that they may need to apply for a licence following a change in legislation - all private landlords who have a house or flat occupied by five or more people in two or more households (a household can be an individual, couple or family) are required to apply to the council for a HMO Licence from 1 October 2018
